How Can You Tell if There Are Biohazards in Your Building?

Many signs could indicate the presence of a biohazard in your commercial building. You may notice unusual odors from drains or other areas if you don’t see any visible signs. Some people may even experience different symptoms that could indicate exposure to a biohazard. Some of the most common ones include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea

What are Some Common Biohazards?

Biohazards are considered risks to human health and the environment. Several kinds can impact commercial businesses, particularly after an accident or in the healthcare industry. Mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses are some of the most common.

Other biohazards our team can handle are listed below:

  • Human Blood

Even though the human body has over a gallon of blood pumping through the body, it could be a biohazard. Trauma or accidents often result in a lot of bleeding that needs to be cleaned. Human blood has the potential to spread pathogens, which are microorganisms that could cause disease. Items that have been affected by human blood are also considered biohazards.

  • Animal Waste

This may refer to the carcass, bedding, or body part of an animal known to be infected with pathogenetic organisms. It can also refer to animal manure, which is often used as fertilizer. If it’s not properly disposed of, it can lead to food or water supply contamination.

  • Human Bodily Fluids

These are fluids that are excreted from the body and have the potential to transmit diseases. Human bodily fluids, such as sweat, urine, and vomit, must be cleaned immediately. A few other examples of this type of biohazard include the following:

  • Semen
  • Amniotic fluid
  • Saliva
  • Vaginal secretions
  • Feces
  • Sharp Objects

Sharps are objects that can puncture or cut skin, such as needles and glass shards. They can also include razor blades and scalpels. Sharps can be contaminated with blood or other bodily fluids, making them a biohazard. If not properly disposed of, they can also cause serious injuries.

  • Pathological Waste

Pathological waste is a human body part, tissue, or organ removed. It can also include animal tissue or organs. Pathological waste should be disposed of properly, as it is likely to be contaminated with diseases that may harm you and your employees.

  • Infectious Waste

Infectious waste contains microorganisms that can cause disease. Many of these items have been contaminated with blood, bodily fluids, or other pathogens. Infectious waste can spread disease if not disposed of properly.

Some examples of infectious waste are listed below:

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • IV tubing
  • Blood transfusion bags
  • Swabs
  • Bandages
  • Empty syringes

Biohazard Levels

There are four primary levels of biohazards:

Level 1
Low Risk

Level 1 biohazards pose a very minimal potential hazard to the environment, labs, and human health. They aren’t known to cause disease in otherwise healthy individuals. Level 1 biohazards are not easily spread and typically include bacteria and viruses, such as: - E. coli - Canine hepatitis - Varicella

Level 2
Moderate Risk

Level 2 biohazards can cause mild diseases in humans and pose a minimal potential hazard to the environment and labs. Fortunately, these illnesses can be controlled with vaccinations or prophylactic treatments. Level 2 biohazards can be spread through direct contact or indirectly, and an example includes Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb).

Level 3
High Risk

Level 3 biohazards pose a high potential hazard and can cause severe illnesses that can also be controlled with vaccines or proper treatment. These biohazards can be spread through direct and indirect contact or airborne transmissions. Level three biohazards include bacteria such as Bacillus anthracis (Ba).

Level 4
Extreme Risk

Level 4 biohazards pose the highest potential hazard to the environment and labs. Exposure to these hazards can lead to fatal diseases in humans, and there are no available treatments or cures. Level 4 biohazards can be spread through direct and indirect contact, airborne transmission, or through the skin and include viruses such as Ebola (EBOV).
